Covers are a touchy subject within just about any genre, but perhaps none more so than the fiercely defended realm of metal. Nine times out of ten, parody bands who try to put a different spin on classic metal songs are truly dreadful.
All those attempts at mash-ups with more mainstream rock numbers are quickly and rightly exposed as sucking a staggeringly wide variety of balls, and frankly the same goes for established heavy bands who try to do ‘extreme’ covers of old pop tunes. Let’s face it, it’s just classless, pure shtick, to go down that road.
Sometimes, though, that one time out of ten, it just clicks. Apocalyptica’s ‘Plays Metallica on Four Cellos’ was a borderline example - it teetered on the precipice, but the band have since proved they’ve got more than one string to their bow, and as such got away with it.
